Typographic Poster Project: Research & Ideas

Here's an update on where i'm at with this project. I did my research in three stages. Firstly, I looked at a number of contemporary designers today that create Typographic Posters. They all used a variety of techniques and styles, from Photography and sculpture, to Screen Printing and Digital Editing.

It was important that I looked at a varied range of work, so that I was able to use this research to fully explore my own project from a variety of different angles. The designers and design companies I looked at were Anne Jordan, Côme De Bouchony, Nathalie Cury, Noviki Studio and Propagandism.

Secondly, I looked at a variety of Olympic Posters over the last 100 years. It was very interesting to see the diverse range of styles as a whole and the major themes that are incorporated throughout all the designs. Also it give an insight into the development of typographic design, and the trends that came
and went too.

Finally, I looked at some typographic history that I thought would help me with my designs. I firstly looked at the grid system method. Although i've looked at it before, it was good to look at it again, and the qualities it brings to creating clean and contemporary pieces of work. Secondly I briefly looked at Josef Albers and the Bauhaus movement. Primarily looking at Albers experiments with shape, using geometric shapes to create letters in their simplest form. Having a go at creating a typeface would really push me as a designer, and using shape, something i'm quite confident with using, word be the perfect starting point.

Then i've taken my research, and begun applying it to my brief, to create some typographic posters for the Conqueror Brief. I'm pleased that i've been able to come up with a variety of designs, showing inspiration from the artists and styles that i've research. Below are some initial sketches of ideas i've had for my final pieces. I've taken some of these ideas and began to implement them digitally, which i'll be finishing off in the coming days.
