For this Typographic Poster project, I needed to have a look at a variety of styles to get some inspiration going. So I have.
A great site, where i've found basically everything I need, is typographicposters.com. Its a project to curate as many typographic posters as possible that challenge type, colours and shapes to express a message.
The first designer i've looked at is Anne Jordan, she works with a variety of medias to create her typographic posters. Shown here are pieces from a variety of projects. Starting in the top left, the first three pieces of work were taken from a project based on her interpretation of the book The Catcher In The Rye, using words from the book which encapsulate it’s themes. She created used materials that she felt would reinforce the concepts attached to the words used. Therefore she used a variety of processes, such as molding rubbing, folding paper and using clay to form the letters as well as using printing techniques with ink and stencils.
She then photographed or scanned the handmade objects to edit them digitally so that she could produce them as posters. The majority of the final posters cut up the letters so that the words become distorted and form abstract compositions over literal text.
This has helped to create an incredibly distinctive abstract style, but one that has used a variety of different techniques. I still think however they all share a mutual style and can be viewed as a set.
Looking through Anne’s website its incredible interesting to see how creative she is with type, constantly thinking about new ways to represent it with a variety of medias. I think its particularly interesting that she has used alot of what I would term as being quite messy medias, but the digitally edited final pieces look incredibly clean and fresh. Hopefully I can take this inspiration further and try out some more mixed media work myself.
I've realised that if I put all these artists into one blog post, its going to be pretty long, so we'll live it at that for today. I'll put on another one up tomorrow.
